Grand Canyon National Park
An illustrated stratigraphic poster of the Grand Canyon’s geology. The client approached Lantern Press requesting a more unique and illustrated version of a typical stratigraphic column that would appeal as an educational poster.
My concept was inspired by what I remembered seeing in my school science textbooks, in which they had an image of the Earth cut into sections to show its layers. I remembered thinking when I was a kid that it looked like a jawbreaker, and similarly the Grand Canyon’s layers reminded me of a slice of cake. I wanted to keep the illustrated layers clearly lined up with their stratigraphic sections for simpler identification, so I chose a somewhat brighter and deeper-toned color palette for the topography.
